July Art Challenge Gallery is Live ✨ + August Challenge Theme: Summer Festival (Natsu Matsuri)

Hi Reader,

Hope you've been drawing lately. Two things to share today — the July gallery is live, and August's challenge is officially open.

✨ July Art Challenge Gallery is Now Live!

Theme: Swimsuit & Beach

The July Art Challenge gallery is now live on our Student Art page. This month's theme was Swimsuit & Beach, and our students gave us the full beach episode treatment. The gallery is packed with sun glare, wet hair, and characters who finally got a day off from the plot. Scroll through it and you can practically feel the heat coming off the sand.

Every piece in there is someone who finished a drawing and then actually posted it, which is the harder half. Take your time scrolling — there's a lot to look at this month.

All featured artworks are promoted through Anime Art Academy's 100,000-subscriber email newsletter and to our 300,000 social media followers. Your work will also be shared with manga publishers and industry professionals in Japan — real eyes from the industry will see your art.

⭐ Bonus for paid course students: Your submission will also be shared directly with manga editors at Japanese publishing houses.

🎨 August Art Challenge Theme: Summer Festival (Natsu Matsuri)

Every anime with a summer arc eventually finds its way to the festival. The lanterns strung between stalls, the smell of grilled skewers and takoyaki, a taiko drum keeping time somewhere in the crowd, fireworks cracking open the sky right when two characters finally say what they've been holding back all episode. It's one of those settings that shows up again and again because it just works — a whole world in one night, dressed in yukata.

This is where character design gets to have fun in a different way. A character who normally lives in armor or a school uniform, suddenly in a yukata they clearly don't wear often and can't stop adjusting. The one who scoops three goldfish and instantly regrets having nowhere to put them. A quiet character lit up orange and red by a firework reflection, saying more with that one expression than three panels of dialogue could. Think about what your character does at a festival when nobody's watching them do it.

For this month's challenge, draw your character — OC, fave, anyone — at a summer festival. Yukata or not, fireworks or food stalls or just two people sitting on a curb after the crowd thins out, the scene is yours to build. I've been waiting for an excuse to see everyone's festival designs, so don't hold back.

📅 Deadline: September 10th, 2026
