August Art Challenge Gallery is Live ✨ + September Challenge Theme: Your Favorite Anime, Manga, or Original Character

Hi Reader,

Hope you've been drawing lately. Two things to share today — the August gallery is live, and September's challenge is officially open.

✨ August Art Challenge Gallery is Now Live!

Theme: Summer Festival (Natsu Matsuri)

The August Art Challenge gallery is now live on our Student Art page. This month's theme was Summer Festival (Natsu Matsuri), and our students captured warm nights, bright festival lights, and characters making the most of summer. Every piece feels like a summer memory worth keeping.

Every piece in there is someone who finished a drawing and then actually posted it, which is the harder half. Take your time scrolling — there's a lot to look at this month.

All featured artworks are promoted through Anime Art Academy's 100,000-subscriber email newsletter and to our 300,000 social media followers. Your work will also be shared with manga publishers and industry professionals in Japan — real eyes from the industry will see your art.

⭐ Bonus for paid course students: Your submission will also be shared directly with manga editors at Japanese publishing houses.

🎨 September Art Challenge Theme: Your Favorite Anime, Manga, or Original Character

There's a specific kind of character who moves into your head and never leaves. Sometimes it's someone from an anime that wrapped years ago and you still think about how they were written. Sometimes they only exist on the page: a manga character you've followed for volumes, never animated, maybe never will be. Or it's whoever showed up three episodes into this season and rearranged your entire personality. And sometimes they've never appeared in anything at all, because you made them, and nobody else knows them the way you do. Anime, manga, or your own original character — all of it counts this month.

Everyone's fave hits differently, which is exactly why this one always turns into the most varied gallery of the year. The swordsman whose whole design rests on a coat that shouldn't physically move like that. A villain with a great smile and zero redeeming qualities. A side character with maybe six lines of dialogue who somehow ended up your favorite in the entire cast. A magical girl from a show that aired before you were born. A protagonist who only exists in black and white on the page, so you get to decide what color their hair actually is. Your OC, in the outfit you've drawn eleven times and still haven't gotten right. The only real requirement is that you care about them.

So draw your fave. Portrait, action pose, sitting on a windowsill doing nothing in particular — the character matters more than the composition here, and how you choose to show them is half the answer. The last time we ran this theme, the range of who people picked was the best part of the whole gallery. I'm counting on that again. Show me who's been living in your head.

📅 Deadline: October 10th, 2026
