Anime Art Academy Teacher's Advice to Students- How to draw body lines and make them look attractive

Hello Reader,

Many people have the same problems when they draw.
Let's learn about drawing techniques again, this time by referring to advice given by a professional Japanese teacher in response to a question from a real student.
Let's use it as a reference when you draw illustrations and manga!

How to draw body lines and make them look attractive

Student
Hello!
I'd appreciate some feedback on the drawing itself as well as on the coloring, please. Thank you!

Teacher
This is amazing work, I can tell you've worked really hard on it!
The girl is drawn very prettily! The colors are beautiful and the posing makes the girl look like she is peeking in. The details are also wonderfully drawn!

Below is a summary of the feedback on your illustration using Sensei's image. Please refer to it if you like!!

Drawing: The position of the ears on the face can be improved by being aware of the point of contact with the face. The eyes at the back of the screen can be shortened in width to make them appear to be in the correct position. The drawing of the hair in the back could be increased to complete the picture. The position of the torso is the thin red line. It will be better if you are aware of the three-dimensionality! The thickness of the lines is constant, so it would be better if the hair and the wrinkles in the clothes were drawn with thinner lines and the eyelashes and outlines with thicker lines!

Composition: To enhance the girl's attractiveness, I made her large enough to fill the entire screen. Adding a three-dimensional space to the picture by drawing the wrap-around collar in the back and the scarf and sleeves blowing in the wind will make the picture more attractive.
Color: The picture looks a little dull and could use some color correction to finish it off. Overlays and burn-in layers can be used to remove the dullness of the colors. Adding wrinkles to clothing by painting them in will increase the detail of the picture. Adding highlights to darker colors, such as collars, will give the entire painting a more glamorous look.

Student
Hello! I'm working on the corrections but have a question... I didn't really understand sensei's explanation about the position of the torso. The comment says: "The position of the torso is the thin red line". But in the corrected image, there's still a big gap between the red line and the drawing, it doesn't look like it's just the clothing bulkiness. I highlighted it in green. What does this area mean? Thank you so much.

Teacher
Sorry for the confusion! The red line is a guideline for the drawing.
In the girl's pose, the upper body is tilted slightly forward. Due to the placement of the collarbone (blue line) and trapezius muscles (orange line), the shoulders will roughly resemble a diamond-shaped silhouette.

You don't have to think too hard. Just remember that in this upper body orientation, the shoulders are roughly diamond-shaped.

Student
Thank you for the clarification! To confirm, the collarbone in the drawing should be lower to match the blue guideline, right? (see arrows in my image)

Teacher
Thanks for the confirmation! The previous image is a large drawing of the collarbone to illustrate the role of the guideline (diamond-shaped line), so the original position is generally fine! If you draw it in detail, it will be in the position shown in your attached image.

Student
Woah, this feedback is amazing! The feedback I got recently was a lot shorter and simpler. I don't know if you guys changed your process but I love this!! Thank you! I'll make the changes suggested.

Taking the advice of real students will surely improve your drawing skills!

Let's start drawing!
